I have often thought about this fact in relation to boredom: God has placed in our hands His very word. When I think about that, I realize that there is no reason for us ever to be “bored.” How could we! We have God’s very word before us to fill our minds and thoughts. What could possibly be more enthralling than that?
There have been times that I have been chastened a bit in my spirit when I think about this fact in my own life. Imagine a day in which I have some free time. I rise in the morning and read the Bible for a period of time, as is my normal routine. Then, at some point later in the day, perhaps I find myself free of duties and still have further time on my hand. What am I going to do? Perhaps I see nothing particular to do that grabs my attention and interests me. And the thought enters my mind, “I have already read the Bible today…”
Wait a minute, there! Is the reading of the Bible something that I consider an obligation that I just want to get out of the way in the morning? Or is it something that I desire to do and delight in? More time to read the Bible above the normal day’s allotment: How does that strike me?
If you ever find yourself with free time, how can it ever be that you don’t know of something to do that interests you? We should be able to turn to God’s word in such times and find a treasure of joy before us. There really is no reason ever for a Christian with a Bible to complain of being bored. Why not read God’s word at that time? Does that sound boring, too?
So the next time that you find yourself tempted to think or say something resembling a complaint about boredom, why not simply pick up God’s word and enjoy hearing from your Maker and God who loves you. And if that does not appeal to you, let it be a chance to examine your heart as to why it doesn’t.
I imagine that if we all took this idea to heart, it would bear good fruit in our lives.
