Why so Much Evil?

So many horrible evils are happening today. School shootings, the murder of unborn babies (abortion), the celebration of sexual sin (both heterosexual and homosexual), drug addictions, and many more. Two questions that must be on the minds of some are  (1) “why are all these horrible things happening?” and (2) “how do we change things?”

Let’s look at the first. Though there are many contributing factors to why evil things are happening today, the heart of the problem is just that, the heart. Jesus said

…That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man (Mark 7:20-23, NASB)

Why all these evils? Because men are evil. They have a bad heart.

But what is the answer? If the problem is the heart of man then the answer to these evils must also have to do with the heart. Jeremiah 31:33 says

…I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people (NASB)

Also Ezekiel 36:26

Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh (NASB)

The Jeremiah quotation is found in Hebrews 8 when speaking of the New Covenant and the Ezekiel quotation appears to be at least one passage that Jesus refers to in John 3:5 when speaking of being born again (Ezekiel 36:25-27). God alone can change the heart of man and He does so in the new birth.

So what does this mean for you? Should you be involved in politics, social activism, and similar efforts? Maybe. God can certainly use these things. But the greatest effort you can make to stop the evils of today is to give the gospel message, the good news of Jesus Christ, to others. It alone is the message that can change the great problem, the heart of man.
